Including Pets in Your
Engagement Session
Pets are family, and including them in your engagement session can make your photos feel even more personal and meaningful. Whether your dog, cat, or another furry friend is playful, snuggly, or full of personality, their presence adds genuine emotion, spontaneity, and joy to your images.
Before the session, think carefully about your pet’s personality, comfort, and energy level. Some pets love open spaces like parks, meadows, or lakesides, while others feel safest in quieter environments, like your home or a calm urban street. Planning the right setting helps your pet shine naturally on camera.
1. Planning Ahead
If possible, bring a friend or family member to help manage your pet during the session. This person can hold leashes, offer treats, or step in when your pet needs a break. If you don’t have anyone to help, a hands-free running leash can be a great solution — it allows me to safely hold and manage your pup while photographing you, so we can finish the session with just the two of you while keeping your furry friend included.
2. Extra Hands Help
Treats, toys, or even a favorite blanket can help keep your pet engaged and happy. Bring a water bowl for longer sessions, and remember that pets, like people, may need breaks. Allowing your dog or cat to rest, stretch, or explore a little will result in natural, relaxed photos.
3. Props & Comfort
The goal isn’t to stage perfect poses but to capture your bond. Whether your dog jumps in for a kiss, curls up at your feet, or curiously explores the scene, these little unscripted moments create memories you’ll cherish forever. Pets help slow the pace, bring out natural laughter, and remind you to enjoy the experience together.
Including your pet can make your session feel joyful, personal, and unique. With a little planning, some patience, and a focus on connection, your furry family member can shine in your engagement photos just as much as you do.
